Hello! So today, I wanted to go a little into depth about what to keep in mind when you are learning choreography.
First off, you need to make sure that you know that everyone has their own way of learning and taking in information, so while yes, the dancer next to you may almost immediately pick up on the choreography that your teacher is showing you, you need to know that you may need to learn a certain way, separate from them.
You might need to record your teacher running through the choreography in order to learn it; you might need to take the choreo home and rerun the steps by yourself. There are a lot of ways to take in new information, you should fit it to your learning style
Secondly, you need to make sure that you don't forget to keep a clear mind while learning new information. I know that it is frustrating when you have gone over the same choreography and have kept messing up one part, whether it has been footwork, facial expressions, arms, or just choreo itself. Its okay to get frustrated, but don't let that stop you from learning. Take a break, think about the choreography, and come back to it when you feel you have it. Ask a teacher to help you out if you are struggling, they'd be glad to help. They'd rather you go to them and ask questions, rather than sit and suffer in silence.
Lastly, trust in yourself. You may not do the move exactly how everyone else is, but if you feel confident enough to have it down, and you are doing the correct moves, but just conforming it to your unique style, then do it that way. Don't copy what you see, I mean, yes do the correct moves, but don't just watch someone else. If you are only watching someone else, you won't ever learn the choreography. You are learning the moves for a reason, for you to memorize them, and for you to learn trust in yourself.
With all of these tips, I hope that I had helped you think about learning choreography in a different light. I know that sometimes, choreography can be very intricate, and infuriating, but if you keep these things in mind, I hope they help you become a better dancer.
